Choosing a steel section starts with the drawing, not the cheapest quotation. For Indian builders and fabricators, the practical question is whether the supplied profile matches the member designed for the job. ISMB and ISMC describe different section families. They should never be treated as interchangeable simply because their depths look similar.

Start with the section shape

An ISMB beam has an I-shaped profile, with a web between two flanges. An ISMC channel has a channel-shaped profile, with both flanges projecting to the same side of the web. These shapes affect how the member behaves and how connections can be made. Profile alone does not establish the capacity of a particular member.

A beam may appear in the main frame of a shed or building. A channel may appear in bracing, platforms or fabrication assemblies. These are examples of possible uses, not selection rules. The engineer's drawing must establish the exact section, orientation, grade, connections and restraint for the actual structure.

Compare complete specifications

A quotation that says only beam or channel leaves too much open. Record the section designation, dimensions, required grade, ordered length and quantity. Ask whether the stated weight is a theoretical reference or the actual dispatch weight. Make sure the purchase order and supplier confirmation use the same descriptions.

IS 808 covers dimensions and properties for hot rolled beam, column, channel and angle sections. IS 2062 addresses structural steel material specifications. They serve different purposes: a dimensional reference does not replace a material requirement. Confirm the applicable edition, amendments and project specification with the designer [verify].

Do not substitute by depth or weight

Two sections with similar overall depth can have different flange widths, web thicknesses and sectional properties. Matching the weight per metre is also not proof that one profile can replace another. A change may affect the connection, erection sequence and member performance. Obtain written design approval before accepting an alternative section.

This applies equally when a supplier offers a nearby size because the specified section is unavailable. Ask for the full offered designation and supporting documents. Pass those details to the person responsible for the design. Do not solve a supply delay by making an undocumented substitution at the fabrication table.

Check fabrication and delivery needs

Confirm whether material should arrive in standard lengths or be cut to the approved cutting schedule. Check handling space, truck access and storage arrangements before booking delivery. Longer stock is not automatically more economical if it creates unusable offcuts or additional handling.

For phased projects, issue a clear lot schedule linked to fabrication or erection requirements. Keep size groups identifiable and reconcile each delivery against its packing list. Mark any mixed or uncertain bundles for review rather than sending them straight into production.

Make receiving checks repeatable

At receipt, compare the profile, dimensions, lengths and markings with the order. Inspect for obvious damage or distortion and review the supplied test documentation. Identify discrepancies before cutting or welding. Keep the inspection record with the purchase order so the next team can trace what was accepted.

The right section is the one that meets the approved design and purchasing specification, arrives with clear documentation and can be fabricated as intended. A precise enquiry makes that outcome easier for everyone involved.
